About Our VIN Decoder

A VIN Decoder Tool, Not A Paywall

VIN Decoder decodes any vehicle and checks it against the federal recall registry — free, instantly, and without asking for an account.

Every VIN on the road already encodes almost everything worth knowing about a vehicle — its manufacturer, model, engine, plant, and model year. NHTSA, the US government's vehicle safety regulator, maintains the official catalog that decodes it and the official registry of every safety recall ever issued against it.

Most sites put a form, a paywall, or an email capture between you and that public data. VIN Decoder doesn't. Type a VIN, get the report.

What the tool does

Decode — full factory build specification from a 17-character VIN: make, model, year, trim, engine, drivetrain, plant, and more.

Recall check — every open NHTSA safety campaign issued for that vehicle's year, make and model, with the defect, the risk, and the remedy.

Compare — two vehicles side by side, with every differing field highlighted, built for shortlisting a used-car purchase.

History — every report you generate is saved locally in your own browser as a revisitable permalink. Nothing is uploaded.

Where the data comes from

Vehicle specifications are decoded using NHTSA's Product Information Catalog (vPIC). Recall information comes from NHTSA's public recalls database. Both are official US government sources, shown as-is.

What this tool is not

VIN Decoder is not affiliated with NHTSA or any manufacturer. It is not a full vehicle-history report — no title, accident, odometer, or ownership records — and it is not a substitute for a pre-purchase inspection. Recall matches are by year, make and model, not by individual VIN; always confirm your specific vehicle with a franchised dealer.
