World Manufacturer Identifier (positions 1–3)

BMW splits its WMI by both country and division. WBA marks a Germany-built standard passenger car, WBS marks a Germany-built M-division model (M3, M4, M5), and WBY marks a Germany-built BMW i electric model. Every X3, X5, X6 and X7 sold in the US is actually built at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, carrying a 5UX or 4US WMI rather than a German one.

Engine code (position 8)

Position 8 encodes the engine family — the difference between, say, a 330i and an M340i. BMW's engine codes (N20, B48, B58, S58 and others) map to this position combined with the model year, which the live decode above resolves automatically.

Model year and plant (positions 10–11)

Spartanburg is BMW's largest plant worldwide by volume, building every X3 through X7 sold globally. Munich, Germany remains the home of the 3 Series, 5 Series and M models. Position 11 resolves the exact plant for any VIN decoded above.
