Reading A GMC VIN

GMC's VIN follows the same 17-character ISO standard as every other manufacturer, but the first few characters split out by division and country in a way that's worth knowing before you buy.

World Manufacturer Identifier (positions 1–3)

GMC shares General Motors' overall WMI system but uses its own division code. 1GT marks a US-built GMC truck — the Sierra is built at Fort Wayne, Indiana, alongside Chevrolet's Silverado on shared platforms. Canada-built GMCs carry 2GT, and Mexico-built (Silao, Guanajuato) carry 3GT.

Engine code (position 8)
