Reading A Jeep VIN

Jeep's VIN follows the same 17-character ISO standard as every other manufacturer, but the first few characters split out by division and country in a way that's worth knowing before you buy.

World Manufacturer Identifier (positions 1–3)

The third character on a Jeep VIN marks the vehicle type. 1C4 and 1J4 mark a US-built Jeep SUV — the Wrangler is built in Toledo, Ohio, and the Grand Cherokee in Detroit, Michigan. 1C6/1J6 marks the Gladiator truck. Mexico-built Jeeps (Compass, some Renegades) carry a 3C4 WMI, and Italy-built Renegades carry ZAC.
